Do You Enjoy Your Work
- Or Do You Just Love The Pay Check?

Leahcim Semaj, Ph.D. - Change Agent

In June, we began this journey into self-understanding focusing on issues relating to compatibility in relationships. For July, we wish to shift the focus to the role of personality in the world of work and job satisfaction.

Many young people will be leaving school this month totally unprepared for what’s ahead. The process begins in earnest as soon as the child is asked to select the subjects of specialization to begin preparation for CXC exams. Most students make this most critical choice based on insufficient information. Later this month we will focus specifically on students and what they need to know to make better choices. One High School retained us to assess the Personality Profile of all the students from Third to Fifth form in order to help them make better choices.

The Mixed Blessings of Redundancy
Many of you hate your jobs with a passion. For many Jamaicans, the many redundancies in the last five years presented mixed blessings. Yes, there were disappointments and the pain usually associated with change. But many people got the chance that they were dreaming for, to start over, to do something that they really wanted to do. To find or create work that was in harmony with who they were. A good portion of the stress that people experience in the work arena is a direct result of the misalignment between their work and their personality. Most of you received no guidance in this area. The sad situation is that your children are not getting any more help than you did.

What is Your Dominant Function?
Each personality type has one dominant function that never changes. This dominant function is your most developed function, the one you use most often and with the most success. Naturally, it plays a very influential role with respect to what you find satisfying. People with the same dominant function have a lot in common. The four dominant functions are Sensing, Intuition, Thinking and Feeling.

Careers for Dominant Sensors - People who are ISTJ, ISFJ, ESTP, ESFP

  • You need to be able to collect and use the many facts and details that you naturally notice
  • You usually do well in areas that let you gather information and use your keen powers of observation

Careers for Dominant Intuitives - People who are INTJ, INFJ, ENTP, ENFP

  • You are most interested in possibilities and the connections between facts, rather than the facts themselves
  • Work that allows new ways of solving problems
  • Use of unconventional approaches
  • Are not limited by what has been done in the past

Careers for Dominant Thinkers - People who are INTP, ISTP, ENTJ, ESTJ

  • For you, logic is primary in all your decisions so you usually find satisfaction in work that allows you to use objective criteria
  • You prefer situations governed by a fair set of standards and principles

Careers for Dominant Feelers - People who are ISFP, INFP, ESFJ, ENFJ

  • Your personal values strongly influence your decisions and opinions so it is important that you feel good about the work you do and the impact it has on people
  • You are concerned about how humanely and kindly you and others are treated

In the coming weeks we will provide more detailed analysis between personality and satisfaction at work.
